Discover causes of window stains between panes, how to identify seal failure, and solutions for repair. Ensure your home's windows stay clear and functional.
In Matthews, NC, our humid climate, strong sun exposure, and seasonal temperature swings often cause window seals to fail over time.
When a seal fails, moisture and minerals seep between the panes. As it evaporates and re-condenses, it leaves behind stains, haze, or what look like scratches inside the window.
This is known as seal failure, and it’s extremely common in our area, especially for windows 8–15 years old.
Our water-fed pole system uses purified water and soft nylon brushes designed to protect glass — not scratch it.
Marks between the panes are internal and cannot be caused or removed by exterior window cleaning.
- Touch Test: Lightly glide your finger across the glass. If you can’t feel the mark, it’s inside.
- Angle Test: Tilt your head. If the stain “moves” with your view, it’s trapped between panes.
1. Replace the full window unit — Long-term, guaranteed fix.
2. Replace just the glass unit (IGU) — More affordable if the frame is still good.
3. Defogging repair — Temporary, not usually recommended for lasting results.
Tip (STRONGLY SUGGEST) :
Because of how common the issue is most home builders and sellers offer warranty coverage for seal failures, even years after installation. It’s worth checking!
We take pride in treating your home with the highest level of care and professionalism.
Unfortunately, once seal failure occurs, no external cleaning method can repair the damage inside the window.
If you’d like, we can recommend reputable local glass specialists.
